Tents at weekend camp.
Camp 1964 Nolton Haven
There was no professional photographer engaged this year so I volunteered to take the group photograph on an Agfa Isolette (2.5 inch square negative). I printed up whole-plate copies but they received a rather mixed reception. Campers mostly came from Higham, Rochester, St Augustines, Derby and St Stephen’s, Coventry.
Helen Perry, Lynn Elkington, Frankie Coxen, Anna-Marie Munday & A.N.Other receiving briefing from Ralph Weller from Higham.
The Rider Family- Dennis, Pat, Sarah & pet. Now why would one call that dog Shaggy?
Ricky Channing
Was it really that warm at Nolton Haven in 1964?
Ian Holiday. Just look at all that hair!
Ian insisted on taking my photograph as well. Umm. Just look at all that hair!
1964 Reunion at Higham
Camp 1965 Cei Bach
My photograph again. Taken on a new 35mm camera. Still a stretch for such a small negative.
The Bullying (all in good fun, what?)
The Chores
The Beach
The Bank
The Childish Behaviour.
The clear blue sky.
The unreliable transport.
The Restaurant
The Romance
O.K. Until my girlfriend arrives tomorrow from Higham. Lynn Elkington & Ian Holiday share an embrace (at Ian’s request).
Camp 1966 Borrowdale. A much smaller affair for the Junior Clubs.
This one taken by me again, this time sheltering from the rain.
Hunt The Nark. Team Members disguised themselves and hid in the vicinity from the campers. None of the young campers failed to spot me as a hunch-backed old woman but I fooled numerous hill walkers who were mightily surprised to see me vault a gate when I came to one. I have seldom laughed so much.
A particularly good photograph of Tony Betts on the far right, next to Jennie Faulkner & Von Hasler. Paddy Langham didn’t really need to dress up in that old mackintosh; he dressed weirdly enough anyway. Then there is Leslie Channing and Chris Wiles. I cannot remember Ivor’s (far left) surname, nor the names of the other four people.
Camps 1967 Nolton Haven again
No group photograph so just a sample of single shots:
Val Hasler in front of mysterious barn.
Jane Elkington & Hilary Armitage at the local laundrette.
Me (Mike Kent) in pullover knitted by my Gran. Possibly for someone else.
Super elegant Paddy Langham. (See what I mean?)
Chris Wiles
Dental hygiene in the luxury washroom. What a lovely flat field for a camp site and what a nice bracing wind. (1967). Michael Barton & John Bardoe.
My name is Charlie Elston from St Augustine’s Derby I can see myself and many old friends from the joint camps in the pictures I just did a mad google search and could not believe my luck. These camps were from my youth and I am sharing with a few remaining friends
These were some of my happiest times of my youth Tony Betts our vicar died a few years back he was such a nice caring guy as was our curate Dennis Ryder and his wife. Thank you so much for sharing all this I thought it was lost forever, Remind me guy in gran’s pullover forgot been over 50 years now! I was 16 amazing!
I remember you well Charlie. There were not so many fellows from Derby. I remember Tony Betts once telling us that he felt that awaiting the St Augustine’s coach to arrive was like the boys waiting for the girls.
The fellow in the pullover is me and I only add my name at the very bottom of the Blog. I realise now that this might make things a bit difficult. Anyway, this blog was set up by me, Mike Kent from Higham. I did it mainly to let others have access to the photographs I took back then.
I am in regular contact with Malcolm Redsell, Ian Holiday & Michael Barton, if you recall them. The latter I am sure you will. He is still in contact with Angus Ogilvie and recently Dennis Rider.
I also have Von Hasler’s address (now Yvonne Cash) but I have I have never got around to contacting her. I must do so.
So who else from St Augustine’s do you still see from time to time, or just hear about?
Regards
Mike
I’ll add a few more photographs since I now have an audience of at least one.
I’M THE “LEADER” MICHAEL BARTON !!!!! and still going at 80+ It’s good to be in touch with Michael K. I am also in touch with a Sue who now leads the Higham history group. Last year I joined them in a nostalgic evening event and was able to draw their attention to the hicoey website. Last year also I was involved with the Nurse Cavell centenary celebrations in Norwich and was able to meet up with Dennis and Pat Rider who are retired at Fakenham. Recently Del Clark died and a number of old hic’s were able to meet up – perhaps, you Michael, have a photo to add.I now live in Gravesend with wife, Jeanine ( together now for 40 years) with our daughter Isabelle living nearby at Chattenden. Our son Edward lives in Leeds, Yorkshire where also are our surrogate family Mark and Maria who have recently delivered our first grandson. Our extended family also includes Chloe and Mark in Gravesend. What a great 10 years I had in Higham.
